Gate valve is a type of fluid control valve, which is used for stopping, opening and closing the flow of fluid in a pipeline. It controls the fluid flow by raising and lowering a gate that blocks or allows the flow of fluid. Gate valves are characterized by their simple structure, good sealing performance and low fluid resistance, making them suitable for pipeline systems with high pressure, large diameter, high viscosity and solid particle media.

 

However, due to the large operating torque and slow opening and closing speed, gate valves are generally less suitable for applications that required frequent operation, such as regulating the flow rate, stopping or opening, and flow control. Common application fields include petrochemicals, power generation, metallurgy, light industry, textiles, construction and other industries.
 

Gate valves are used when minimum pressure loss and a free bore is needed, When fully open, a typical gate valve has no obstruction in the flow path resulting in a very low pressure loss, and this design makes it possible to use a pipe-cleaning pig. Gate valve is a multi-turn valve meaning that the operation of the valve is done by means of a threaded stem. As the valves had to turn multiple times to go from open to closed position, the slow operation also prevents water hammer effects.

The working principle of gate valves

 

Gate valves' working principle is very simple. When the valve is open, the gate is fully retracted into the valve body, allowing the fluid to flow through the valve with very little resistance. When the valve is closed, the gate is moved downward, compressing against the seats to create a tight seal and preventing the flow of fluid.

 

The advantages of gate valves
